El estudio de los partidos políticos ha sido un tema clásico dentro de la investigación en Sociología y en Ciencia Política. La afirmación con la que comienza este artículo es firme, los partidos políticos son necesarios e insustituibles en los sistemas democráticos y el interlocutor básico entre la sociedad y el Estado. El propósito de este artículo es establecer una definición de los partidos políticos, significando la importancia que tienen las elecciones en la existencia y supervivencia de los partidos en el sistema, también se analizan las funciones que desarrollan los partidos políticos  y se  incide en la posible crisis por la que atraviesan  estos actores políticos en los sistemas democráticos.

The study of political parties has been a classical theme in Sociology and Political Science investigation. This article is based in the belief that political parties are necessary and irreplaceable in the democratic systems and that they are the basic interlocutor between society and State. The aim of this article is to establish a definition of the political parties, meaning the importance the election process has on their existence and survival in the system. It also proposes to analyze the functions developed by the political parties and the way they affect the possible crisis by which these political actors have been going through in democratic systems.
